Macmillan's Harrogate Takeover!

Hello! Last weekend Macmillan held an event called the 'Harrogate Takeover' and I was lucky enough to be able to get stuck in and help volunteer for this amazing charity. For those of you who don't know, Macmillan is a charity for Cancer Support. This charity is incredible, and even though I was fully aware of how amazing and life changing Macmillan are, I was reminded of this last weekend, as so many members of the public approached me and the rest of the team to thank Macmillan for helping them through tough times. It's not until you hear from people who have been affected, just how much of a difference charities like Macmillan make!

So last Saturday was the Harrogate Takeover, and it was a huge success! So many wonderful individuals turned up to help with the volunteering, and the weather even stayed beautiful which was a huge bonus, especially in Harrogate! The event was held from 10am until 4pm, situated all over Harrogate. I was positioned at the front entrance to Boots, with the fun and games, face painting and cake sale. We then had individual volunteers spread out across Harrogate, with appearances from the Nando's Chicken and our very own Lion (Golden Retriever with a wig) called Solo!

I was overwhelmed with how generous so many members of the public were, and I felt so proud to be part of such a fantastic fundraising event. The Boots team were also giving a helping hand, giving makeovers and selling items specially for Macmillan. Seeing the green banners and flags dotted around the area was so nice, giving people a clear message of how wonderful Macmillan is.

The heartbreaking reality when raising money for Macmillan however, is just how many people are affected by Cancer throughout their lives. It's devastating how many people suffer and how many people feel lost and isolated once they lose a loved one. Macmillan are there to help, they offer that listening ear and shoulder to cry on, which many are often to shy to ask for. I overheard a lady speaking to one of the volunteers, saying she isolated herself from friends and family when she lost her husband to Cancer, and if it hadn't been for Macmillan helping her through her devastating phase she doesn't know how she would have coped with her grief! That's just one example of how Macmillan help so so many people today, and they hope to do so for many years to come with the support and love from their community.

I found out on the Saturday evening that we had raised £1,800 and the money was still being counted! That was simply from the generous people of Harrogate donating to a fantastic charity. I was so touched to hear we had raised so much and so grateful to every single person who donated!

I want to thank Macmillan for giving me the opportunity to help raise money for such a fantastic charity, and I hope people will keep supporting this charity, as its one that reaches out to so many people every single day!

Solo the 'Lion' was great, he drew so much attention and put a smile on so many faces!

He did become sleepy towards the end, but that just made him even more of a cuddly bear!
